You've chosen your fabric. Now comes the part that actually shapes how your veil looks and wears on the day. These five decisions are just as important as the fabric ones — get them right and your veil will look intentional, not accidental.

1. Length

Veil length changes everything about the silhouette. Are you going for a classic shoulder or fingertip length, or something dramatic like a chapel or cathedral train? Measure from the comb position, not the top of your head — it makes a noticeable difference.

2. Gathering

How much fullness do you want at the comb? A gently gathered veil sits softly and naturally. A fuller gather creates volume and drama. The amount of gathering also affects how wide your fabric needs to be before you start — more gather means more fabric drawn in, so factor this in when you're calculating your width.

3. Edge Finish

There are different types of edge finishes — for instance raw, rolled, and bound. Each gives a different look and takes a different level of skill.

If you're a beginner, a raw edge on tulle (cutting the tulle and leaving it as is) is the most forgiving place to start. Decide on your edge finish before you cut your final length, since it can affect how much fabric allowance you need.

4. Comb Attachment

Will you sew your veil directly to a comb, or use a method that lets you attach and detach it later? A removable veil can be useful if you want to take it off for the reception, but a securely sewn comb gives more peace of mind for the ceremony. Either way, test the security of your comb attachment before the big day — not the morning of.

5. Embellishment Placement

If you're adding lace, pearls or other detail, decide where it sits before you finish the rest of the veil. Embellishment along the edge draws the eye outward and scattered embellishment across the body of the veil can add to the overall effect of the veil. Plan this out with pins first so you can step back and see the full effect before committing.
