How to Design a Wedding That Feels Like You

(Not a Pinterest Copy)

If you’ve ever opened Pinterest with the best intentions and closed it feeling lost down a rabbit hole and more confused than inspired, you’re not alone.

Pinterest is incredible for ideas. But when you’re planning your wedding, it can quietly turn into a comparison machine. One minute you’re saving colour palettes, the next you’re wondering whether your wedding should be boho, modern, minimalist, romantic, or somehow all of them at once.

The problem isn’t that you don’t have taste. It’s that you’re surrounded by too many finished answers before you’ve had a chance to ask the right questions.

Designing a wedding that truly feels like you doesn’t start with trends, décor, or even colours. It starts with clarity. And clarity doesn’t come from scrolling. It comes from understanding your story, your preferences, and the feeling you want to create for the people you love.

Pinterest shows you the end result, not the thinking behind it.

What you’re seeing are fully executed weddings with teams, timelines, and budgets behind them. When you try to build your own vision by collecting these finished looks, it’s easy to end up with a board that feels beautiful but disconnected.

You might notice things like:

  • Your pins don’t actually go together

  • You love individual details but can’t picture them in one space

  • Every new idea makes you question the last one

This doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It just means you’re starting in the middle instead of the beginning.

A personal wedding isn’t about being unique for the sake of it.

It’s about creating a day that feels honest. One where your guests could walk in and say, “This feels exactly like them.”

That might show up through:

  • Colours that remind you of a place you love

  • Textures that feel comfortable and familiar

  • Music, lighting, or details that reflect your shared memories

When your design choices come from your story, everything starts to align more naturally. You don’t need to force a theme. You just need a point of view.

Some simple questions can unlock a surprising amount of clarity:

  • Where do you feel most at ease together?

  • What environments do you naturally gravitate toward?

  • Are there colours, seasons, or places that feel emotionally significant?

When my husband and I were planning our wedding, I spent hours collecting ideas online. But it wasn’t until we stepped back and looked at our own story, the places we loved, and the atmosphere we wanted to create that everything clicked. Decisions became faster. The noise faded.

Once you understand what resonates with you as a couple, Pinterest becomes a tool again, not a trap. Instead of saving everything that looks “pretty,” you can start filtering ideas through a clearer lens:

  • Does this support the feeling we want to create?

  • Does it belong in the foreground or the background?

  • Does it reflect us, or just what’s popular right now?

This is how you move from a scattered inspiration board to a cohesive vision that actually guides your decisions.

This is exactly why I created the Find Your Wedding Style guide. It’s a calm, step-by-step creative process designed to help you:

  • Uncover what genuinely inspires you as a couple

  • Define the mood and feeling you want your day to have

  • Turn scattered ideas into a clear, cohesive style direction

If you’re feeling stuck between too many ideas and not enough clarity, the Find Your Wedding Style guide is a great place to begin.

It won’t tell you what’s trending or what you should like. It will help you design a wedding that feels grounded, personal, and yours.

You can download it for free here and start designing from your story instead of the scroll.
